Chapter 5: Society and Inequality

In today's blog, we will be focusing on Society and Inequality in Civilizations.

The first Civilization we will be looking at is the Chinese Civilization. Chinese society was unique in the ancient world in the extent to which it was shaped by the actions of the state. In China, there was the presence of a social hierarchy. The hierarchy is composed of landlords, craftsmen, and peasants, who constituted the major class.

In India, there was the existence of the caste system which they truly valued. The caste system divided Hindus into four different categories namely-- Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and the Shudras. This was in the order of whom is the highest in rank- lowest.

In the Roman empire, there was slavery. Each slave was considered the property of the government and was not allowed to do things that would benefit themselves. Roman slaves were considered not a part of the general roman public, thus, they were subject to corporal punishment, sexual exploitation, and execution.
